Why should I try & improve my accent?
Not everyone needs to improve their accent- but if your pronunciation means that people can’t understand you, then that might be a sign that you would benefit from some help.
Not being understood is frustrating for you, frustrating for your listeners, and can have a serious impact on your ability to pass your degree or progress in your career. We receive many calls from employers seeking help for their great employees who they cannot promote because they can’t be understood. Many university students contact us because they cannot be understood during their presentations. Having help to be a confident communicator is important.
How do I improve my accent?
It is important to first establish what sounds are challenging for you and have the greatest impact on how well you are understood. A comprehensive assessment of your speech is necessary so goals and priorities can be set. An assessment of your speech sounds, your speaking rate, and how you emphasise words is important.
After this is done it will be clear which sounds or other factors will make the biggest difference in improving your speech.
Our speech therapy at Eastside Speech is individualised, and is done by Certified Practicing Speech Pathologists. We work this way because everyone’s accents are really different and therapy needs to be tailored to individual needs. Speech Pathologists are skilled at teaching new sounds- it’s what we do.
It is important to attend therapy each week so you make good progress and gain momentum. We recommend attending for 6-8 weeks in order to see changes in your speech.
Learning new sounds is about learning new speech movements- it takes time, but it’s worth it.
