Welcome to our October Newsletter!
As we embrace these warmer spring days, we’re excited to share the latest happenings at our clinic.
This month, our focus is on the importance of homework in supporting speech therapy. We’ll discuss how consistent practice at home can reinforce the skills learned during sessions, making a significant difference in progress. Our Resource of the Month features magnet books, which are not only fun but also serve as an excellent tool for enhancing language development through interactive play.
We’re also thrilled to spotlight Yan, one of our dedicated speech therapists. Yan brings a wealth of experience and a passion for helping clients achieve their communication goals. Thank you for being part of our community. We hope you find these updates valuable.
The Power of Homework in Speech Development
We want to take a moment to encourage all our clinic families working through speech pathology homework with their kids. Fitting homework into our busy lives is no easy task, especially when there’s so much competing for our time. After a long day at school or daycare, it can be the last thing we feel like tackling.
However, completing homework has a significant impact on helping your child achieve their goals. It provides an opportunity to reinforce the skills learned in the clinic and helps solidify
their progress.
When your child sees their progress at home, it boosts their confidence and gives them a sense of ownership over their learning. This motivation can lead to a more positive attitude toward therapy and a greater willingness to engage during sessions. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to bond with your child, creating a supportive environment for their development.
Here are some tips for making homework feel less like a chore:
- Set aside dedicated practice time: Consistency helps establish a routine.
- Use visual aids: Pictures or words can serve as helpful reminders.
- Keep it fun: Incorporate games or your child’s interests to make learning enjoyable.
- Offer plenty of praise: Celebrate both their successes and the effort they put into completing homework.
- Monitor progress: Celebrate achievements, big or small, to keep motivation high.
If you ever feel stuck or need additional support, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to help!
Well done to all the parents for supporting your kids at home—your efforts are crucial in helping them achieve their speech and language goals!
Resource of the Month: Magnet Books
This October, we’re excited to highlight magnet books as a fantastic resource for enhancing language skills at home. These engaging tools provide endless opportunities for creativity and interaction, making learning fun.
Magnet books encourage hands-on play, which is essential for language growth. As children manipulate the pieces, they can practice vocabulary, follow directions, and engage in storytelling, reinforcing skills from therapy sessions.
One great example is the magnet version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. This book allows children to create scenes from the story while they learn about colors, counting, and healthy foods. Find it in the link below!
Here are some ways to incorporate magnet toys into your child’s learning:
- Storytelling: Use magnet books to create scenes and encourage your child to narrate stories, fostering dialogue and creativity.
- Vocabulary Building: Introduce new words related to colors, shapes, or actions as they play with the magnets.
- Turn-Taking Games: Incorporate magnets into games that require taking turns, helping develop social communication skills.
Magnet books can turn learning into an enjoyable experience, supporting your child’s speech therapy journey!
