Say It with a Card: A Fun Mother’s Day Craft That Builds Communication Skills

Mothers Day Craft

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and making cards is not only a fun activity – it’s also a great opportunity to support speech, language, and social skill development.

Here are some fun ways to work on speech, language, and social skills while making a Mother’s Day card:

Speech Sounds:

  • ‘k’: card, cut, colour, make
  • ‘m’: Mum, message, more, markers
  • ‘t’, ‘d’ and ‘n’: put, dot, heart, add, card, on, can I, one
  • Practice words while decorating or writing your message!

Language Skills

  • Verbs: Describe what you’re doing (e.g. “I’m gluing pink flowers”)
  • Sequence steps (e.g. “First I folded the paper, then I drew a heart”)
  • Use concepts (e.g. colours, sizes, shapes)

Social Skills

  • Take turns using materials (e.g., “Can I use the scissors next?”)
  • Give and receive compliments (“I love your drawing!”)
  • Talk about being thoughtful and showing appreciation for others
