How Speech Therapy After a Stroke Can Help
We use a combination of techniques, including PROMPT® therapy, to guide the jaw, lips, and tongue into the correct positions for speech. We’ve found PROMPT® therapy to be an effective technique for both children and adults, using it in stroke therapy and toddler speech therapy.
Our speech and language therapy program for stroke patients guides the physical movements of speech directly, helping to rewire communication pathways in the brain. Providing holistic support, we combine PROMPT® with customised exercises and strategies to support memory, understanding, and expression.
With a team of experienced speech pathologists in Sydney, our programs help with:
- Aphasia: Difficulty finding words, forming sentences, or understanding language.
- Apraxia of Speech: Challenges with motor planning and coordinating speech movements to produce speech sounds.
- Dysarthria: Slurred or weak speech due to weakened muscles.
- Cognitive-Communication Challenges: Problems with memory, attention, or problem-solving affecting communication.
- Voice Problems: Hoarseness, breathiness, strain or loss of vocal strength.
- Swallowing Difficulties: Therapy for safe eating and drinking (dysphagia).

Stroke Speech Therapy FAQs

Will PROMPT therapy help me if I've had a stroke or brain injury?
PROMPT is very helpful for clients who have acquired speech movement disorders following a stroke or Brain injury. Read more about PROMPT therapy
How soon after a stroke should speech therapy begin?
The sooner, the better. Speech therapy for stroke patients typically starts during the hospital phase. Once you’re discharged, outpatient stroke speech therapy can help reinforce and build on the communication skills developed in rehabilitation.
Our team can help develop compensatory strategies, build new neural pathways, and improve communication skills after injury to reduce frustration and increase the chances of regaining lost speech or learning new ways to communicate.
Does speech therapy after a stroke only focus on speaking?
Not at all. Our speech and language therapy for stroke patients also addresses comprehension skills, memory, problem-solving, and alternative communication methods like AAC. We help clients strengthen their overall communication abilities, which supports everyday interactions, whether it’s chatting with loved ones, making phone calls, or reading a menu at a café.
Can family members or carers be involved in speech therapy and stroke rehabilitation?
We encourage family and carers to be part of the therapy journey. They’ll learn practical ways to support communication at home, use strategies that reinforce therapy goals, and provide encouragement along the way. We’ll also provide updates and resources so everyone feels informed and empowered.
Do you offer telehealth stroke speech therapy?
Although we encourage in-person visits, we offer telehealth speech therapy for patients who can’t get to our clinic easily. Our online sessions are designed to be as interactive and effective as in-person therapy, using visual and verbal prompts, family involvement, and customised strategies aligned with your communication goals.
