Why did we start telehealth speech therapy?

As Sydney’s most visited speech pathology clinic located in its prestigious Eastern suburbs, Eastside Speech Solutions receive regular enquiries from families across Australia seeking our support. Many are drawn by the outcomes we are know to achieve for our families, but are unable to access our support due to location, wait times, or travel barriers.

In response to this growing demand, we introduced a limited number of online speech therapy sessions – allowing families nationwide to access the same trusted care, clinical expertise, and personalised approach we’re known for.

Telehealth speech therapy is simple. It’s similar to our speech therapy programs in Sydney delivered through a secure, online platform (like Zoom). After booking your session, we’ll send you a link to join. From there, your telehealth speech therapist will guide you through tailored activities, interactive and engaging, just like a face-to-face session.

  • Speech clarity, articulation and pronunciation, and accent modification
  • Language skills, helping with comprehension, vocabulary, and expressive language
  • Fluency support for stuttering and cluttering
  • Voice care and vocal strength, particularly for clients with voice strain or hoarseness
  • Literacy speech therapy focused on reading, spelling, and writing to help your child feel confident in school, play, and social situations

Is telehealth speech pathology effective?

Speech pathology via telehealth can be just as effective as in-person therapy, but it does require additional care and engagement by a parent or caregiver.

When using telehealth, speech pathologists can’t physically be in the same room as the client. This means parents need to be hands-on with their child and in communication with the speech pathologist to help deliver the therapy activities.  The parent must also make sure the child is focused, they must set-up for the online video call, have therapy materials ready, fix any technological difficulties, and make sure the therapy session runs smoothly. With involvement to ensure your child is focused and prepare therapy materials, you can:

  • Directly experience how therapy is administered to your child
  • Directly see the progress their child is making in therapy
  • See the progress your child is making in therapy
  • Have a better understanding of treatment

When should I consult a speech pathologist about my child?

In summary, contact Eastside Speech Solutions and ask for your child to be
assessed if:

  • You are worried about your child’s language comprehension, expression and/or understanding
  • You think your child’s understanding is different from other children of the same age
  • Your child stutters (no matter what their age)
  • Your child’s voice sounds different from other children’s e.g it sounds hoarse
  • Your child’s teacher expresses concern.

By the age of one, your baby should be able to:

  • Say words such as dada and mama
  • Try to make familiar sounds, such as car and animal noises
  • Respond to familiar sounds such as the telephone ringing, vacuum cleaner or a car in the driveway
  • Understand simple commands such as “no!” and bye-bye
  • Use gestures like pointing and waving
  • Respond to their name
  • Understand the names of familiar objects and people
  • Enjoy songs, music and books.

By the age of two, most children start to talk to themselves, and you can see their language and communication skills developing:

  • Listen to stories and say the names of the pictures
  • Understand simple sentences, such as “where’s your shoe?”
  • Say the names of simple body parts, such as nose or tummy
  • Use more than 50 words such as “no”, “gone”, “mine” and “teddy”
  • Engage in pretend play
  • Sing simple songs such as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little star” or “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep”
  • Try simple sentences such as “Milk all gone”
  • Use some simple pronouns such as “he”, “if”
  • Should be able to say m, n and h correctly.

By the age of three, your child’s communication should be understood by family, close friends and regular carers, and they should be able to:

  • Understand how objects are used, e.g. a crayon is something you draw with
  • Recognise their own needs, such as hunger
  • Follow directions
  • Understand basic concepts (in/under, hot/cold)
  • Use 3-4 word sentences
  • Understand basic grammar
  • Enjoy telling stories and asking questions
  • Should be able to say p, b, m, n, ng, w, y, t, d, k, g and f

By the age of four, your child should be able to be understood most of the time by most people. If you find friends and acquaintances can not understand your child’s speech, then perhaps a visit to a therapist may be warranted. Your child should be able to:

  • Identify different shape and colour names
  • Understand “wh” questions such as “where are they going?” or “why did he fall?”
  • Understand “time” words such as lunchtime, today, winter
  • Use lots of words (900+) and understand complex sentences
  • Produces grammatically correct sentences that are longer and more complex
  • Use language when playing with other children
  • Should be able to say s, z, sh, ch and j

This is by no means an exhaustive list. If you are concerned about any aspect of your baby or toddler’s speech or language, please give us a call.

Speech therapy for toddlers focuses on early communication skills like building first words, simple sentences, and understanding everyday instructions. It’s more play-based, using activities like songs, games, and stories to keep your child engaged. As children grow, therapy shifts to include more complex language, literacy, and social skills.

Some toddlers can progress without therapy, but for many, delays can persist and impact learning, social skills, and self-confidence, especially when they enter preschool. Early intervention through toddler speech therapy gives your child the best chance to develop clear, confident communication skills from the get-go and as they grow.

There’s no perfect age, but if you have concerns, it’s always best to seek help sooner rather than later. With early intervention, we can address any issues and work towards developing communication skills early, setting your child up for a smoother journey as they enter preschool and grow.
