Why Parents Should Play With Their Kids | Eastside Speech Solutions

When my son was about 3 years old, I told him that I was off to work, and he simply responded by telling me “I need to go to work too!” Bemused, I asked him what his job was and he said, “it’s play!”

Play is the work of childhood. It is through play that children learn to navigate the world around them. It is how they develop communication and language skills and build a bond and connection with you and with others.

But.. sometimes it can be hard to know where to begin when it comes to playing with your little one. So, how do we play?

Here are 5 tips for playing with your child:

1. Observing what toys your child is naturally interested in is a good place to start in terms of developing play with your child.

2. The next step is to join in with your child and create opportunities for them to take turns. Play with the same toys they are playing with. It may be that they are not playing with them in the way you might expect, but go with the flow and copy what they are doing.

3. Then you can add words or gestures to match what is happening in the moment. Repeat the words or gestures at least three times and wait to see if they begin to copy or imitate, and show them your excitement when they do.

4. Play can be however long you have to spend with your child. Take the opportunities when you can. Even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time, over a year or two this is a big investment in your child and their development.

5. The most important part is having fun with your child. When they are having fun, they are relaxed and have the ability to effectively learn communication skills.
